Project Summary:

Through a connection and recommendation from one of my university lecturers, I was given the opportunity to create a documentary centered around Mauro Carraro, a former celebrity photographer who has since transitioned into hair photography. The film reflects on his life and career journey.

My Role and Responsibilities:

Contributed to the development of an autobiographical documentary exploring the lives of Londoners with compelling personal stories.

Led research efforts to identify subjects and shape the documentary’s narrative direction.

Collaborated on establishing the tone and storyline in coordination with senior producers.

Coordinated legal and logistical requirements for a two-day multi-location shoot across London.

Shooting on location in a small team.

Managed file organization and contributed to editorial decisions using common documentary techniques.

Oversaw post-production delivery, ensuring the final edit met the broadcaster’s technical editorial and ethical standards.

My Experience and reflection

This opportunity was a significant one being given the idea for a documentary with the contributor already on board is rare and something I felt privileged to be part of. However, one of the biggest challenges we faced was the lack of a clear timeframe from the beginning. This made it difficult to manage the edit and graphics deadlines effectively. The project also overlapped with the start of the academic year, which meant it had to take a back seat at times.

Additionally, our group had never worked together before. In hindsight, an in-person planning day early on would have been incredibly beneficial to establish clear roles, expectations, and team cohesion.

Despite the challenges, the experience taught me a great deal—from how to be a fair but firm producer to managing an on-location shoot for a documentary that still had an open-ended narrative. I learned the importance of preparation, especially not relying on figuring out the story arc during casual conversations with the contributor on the day of the shoot.

Another key takeaway was understanding the value of putting effort and quality resources into a project. We had access to some fairly outdated equipment, and not everyone on the crew was entirely confident using it. This impacted the final output, reinforcing how important it is to match your ambition with the right tools and preparation.
